In the next financial year, all permanent social grants will receive an increase of at least 5%, according to Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana. During the 2023 Budget Speech, the minister announced the social grant increases for 2023/2024.

Here Are The Grant Increases For 2023

  • R1,985 will be increased to R2,085 as part of the Old Age Grant
  • There will be an increase of R2,105 in the old age grant for those over 75 years old and in the war veterans grant for those over 75 years old
  • There will be an increase in the Disability Grant from R1,990 to R2,085
  • From R1,985 to R2,085, the Care Dependency Grant will increase
  • R1,070 will be increased to R1,125 as part of the Foster Care Grant
  • There will be an increase of R480 to R505 in the Child Support Grant

These increases will take effect in October 2023.

Due to the increasing number of grant beneficiaries in South Africa, Minister Godongwana said the government will spend more on grants.

According to government estimates, South Africa will have 19.6 million grant beneficiaries by March 2026, up from 18.6 million in March 2023. Over R10 billion will have to be spent on grants in 2025 to accomplish this.

As a result of increases in the number of recipients and the value of social grants, expenditures on social grants will increase from R233 billion in 2022/23 to R248.4 billion in 2025/26.

Over the next three years, the government anticipates that childcare grants and older persons grants will receive the majority of government spending.

Over the Medium Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF), Social Development will receive around R1.1 Trillion.

As a result of this grant, social grants will be paid, welfare services will be provided, and advocacy for women, youth, and people with disabilities will be strengthened.
