Changes About Sassa Srd R350 New R999 Threshold Approved With Payday For 36.4 billion of people

By the end of March 2022, SASSA had provided SRD R350 grants to 10.9 million people. The SASSA monthly budget has been reduced to only cover 10.5 million people before the current round began, 0.4 million fewer. As a result of this, they had to lower the threshold to R350 in order to remove some people from the system.

As part of the third round, SASSA tested each applicant’s income against their bank account, not just those who had been declined. Each applicant whose bank account contained more than R350 in income would be excluded if their income exceeded the maximum allowable income of R350.

Sassa Srd R350 New R999 Threshold Approved With Payday

The Department got a very low number of approvals after implementing the new regulations, which included checking applicants’ bank accounts against the R350 income threshold. Only 5.2 million beneficiaries were approved out of 11.4 million applicants in June. Approximately 50% of applications fall into this category.

Here are the numbers

  • There were 11,4 million applications.
  •  There are 43% of men and 57% of women.
  • 4 million of the applicants are caregivers of child support grant beneficiaries.
  • Among the 21 207 applicants, 15 882 are special permit holders from Lesotho; 2133 are asylum seekers; 1613 are special permit holders from Zimbabwe, and 1579 are special permit holders from Angola.
  • 60% of the applicants are under 35 years old, 40% have a grade 12 qualification and 5% have a tertiary education.
  • SASSA has started paying June applicants while also backpaying successful reconsiderations from August 2021 forward.
  • In June 2022, 5.273 million applications were approved, of which 3.729 have already been paid.

Sassa Srd R350 to R999 New Income Threshold

The department of social development proposes a new maximum income threshold of R624, which is at least as close to the poverty line set by Statistics South Africa (STATS SA) after the latest census now that the approved numbers are much lower than expected. By doing so, many people will be eligible for the grant.
