As of May 4, the South African Reserve Bank (SARB) issued new banknotes and coins honoring Nelson Mandela and depicting the Big Five as a family. Other security features, such as a visually impaired feature, raised print on the back of the banknotes, and an ultraviolet feature, have been added.

The coins also show South Africa’s fauna and flora, with the Cape honey bee, bitter aloe, Knysna turaco, king protea, springbok, and southern right whale appearing on the R1 and R5 coins, respectively.

The fourth decimal coin series will be manufactured in all 11 official languages over a specified length of time using a rotating mechanism. The current Mandela banknote series was introduced in 2009.

The current coin series first appeared in 1989. As of May 4th, the South African Reserve Bank (SARB) issued new banknotes and coins. The revised money features a fresh appearance and increased security measures, but the rich South African heritage behind the banknotes remains unchanged. The banknotes honor Nelson Mandela, and the Big Five are now shown as a family on the back. The SARB also honors constitutional democracy by printing the preamble to the South African Constitution in microtext surrounding Madiba’s face and including the country’s flag on the front and back of the banknotes.

Other security features include a visually impaired feature to assist the blind and partially blind, raised print on the back of the banknotes, and an ultraviolet feature. The SARB encourages residents to become acquainted with the improved banknotes and coins, as well as to apply the look, feel, and tilt approach to authenticate their cash.

The South African Reserve Bank has released a new coin series with new animals and vegetation. The 10c coin depicts the Cape honey bee, while the 20c and 50c coins depict the bitter aloe and Knysna turaco. The king protea appears on the R1 coin, while the springbok and southern right whale appear on the R2 and R5 coins, respectively.

The fourth decimal coin series has all 11 official languages of South Africa. Banknotes are replaced every six to eight years, whereas coins are refreshed every 20 to 30 years. The public is urged to become acquainted with the improved banknotes and coins, as well as to apply the sight, feel, and tilt approach to authenticate them.
